The new reboot to Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Homecoming, a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, has been a very hotly anticipated Marvel’s project of 2017. Even after seeing two different versions of Spider-Man in the past 15 years, Tobey Maguire in ‘Spider-Man’ and Andrew Garfield in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’, hopes have been very high from this new version, as finally Spider-Man has come home and become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perfectly addressed by the title “Homecoming”. The web slinger made his debut in the franchise last year in Captain America: Civil War where he looked absolutely phenomenal.
The film is seemingly set a few weeks or months post the events of Captain America: Civil War. Young Protagonist, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), will be seen adjusting his life as a high school student and a superhero fighting crime, trying to recognize his true potential. The origin of Spidey won’t be covered in this movie, which is actually a good thing as people have already seen it in the previous versions of the film and it will give the film a chance to focus on new elements. The story will involve Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to a great extent as a mentor to Peter who has provided him with Stark industries designed technologically advanced spider suit. There is no doubt that the presence of Tony Stark itself spikes the interest in the story.
Peter Parker (Tom Holland)-
In the context of home life, Peter lives in an apartment in New York with his Aunt May and is a student in Midtown High School.
In Civil War, it was revealed that Peter has had his superpowers since 6 months and being a scientific genius, has invented his own web shooters. This invention would come in very handy for Peter, as he won’t be having Tony Stark’s advanced Spidey suit in the entire movie due to Tony taking the suit back because of Peter getting involved with Vulture disobeying Tony’s orders, which would leave him relying on his own invention of costume and webbing.
Antagonists-
In the previous versions of Spider-Man films, many mainstream villains had already been seen such as Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Sandman, The Lizard, Electro, Rhino.
But homecoming has managed to bring a new threat in live action for the very first time in form of Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), who will be playing The Vulture, a well known villain from The Amazing Spider-Man Comics. Adrian is in the business of cleaning up after superhero battles but due to Tony Stark acting more responsibly and starting his own new company- ‘Damage Control’ to clean up after superhero battles, Adrian runs out of his business and will be seen on a path of revenge against Stark. This is the part where he decides to use Alien technology, which the Chitauri used during Avengers Battle of New York, and builds his own flying exo suit and even provides these weapons to street thugs.
Though, Vulture is the central main Antagonist of this film, but there will be other prominent villains as well from the comics who will be supporting him. One among these is Phineas Mason (Michael Chernus), better known as The Tinkerer, who is very good with tech and will be giving the Vulture and the Shocker their suits. Other villain to be seen is the Shocker, which will have two versions, one being played by Bokeem Woodbine and other by Logan Marshall-Green. Shocker, as per comics fires concentrated vibrational air blasts from his wrist gauntlets and is a famous sinister villain.
Other than these big villains, on a smaller level, Spider-Man will also be seen fighting with some street thugs. Looking at these villains, they remind of ‘The Enforcers’ which was the very first villain team-up in Spider-Man Comics. These are the small villains who get hired by big supervillains in the comics.
High School life-
Midtown High school is a major part of Peter’s life and as a result a decent amount of screen time will be given to it introducing fellow students and teachers. It is another reason for the film’s title to be Homecoming as Homecoming is an important event in context of High School.
One of the most significant characters shown from this arc is Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) who is portrayed not only as Peter’s best friend but also one of the very few people who know of his secret as Spider-Man. The comics fans would also remember him as the villain, HobGoblin. Now, Ned won’t be shown turning into a villain within this movie, but it can be seen that MCU is laying out the base for these characters to develop in the future sequels.
Other characters who are given decent screen time are Michelle (Zendaya) who is Peter’s friend with a funny moody attitude and Liz Allan(Laura Harrier), portrayed as Peter’s love interest.
Aunt May (Marisa Tomei)-
The story of Peter Parker can never be complete without his Aunt May, which as we know from Captain America: Civil War, is being played by Marisa Tomei. As in the comics and previous versions of movie, it will be very interesting to watch Peter doing everything in his power to keep his superhero identity from her.
Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)-
It was Tony Stark who introduced Spider-Man to the Avengers in Captain America:Civil war, so, it seems like a perfect decision involving him in the web crawler’s first solo movie. He definitely seems to be considering the young superhero for being a part of The Avengers which is why he let Peter keep the super awesome technologically advanced spider suit but until the time is right and web slinger is ready, Tony asks him to stay low and be a ‘friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’.
Spider Suit-
This will be the most different spider suit seen by far in any of the Spider-Man movies as it has been designed by Tony Stark including all the cool advanced technology and even an AI similar to Iron Man’s suit (Jarvis/Friday).
Apart from AI, a lot of tech will be seen embedded in the spidey suit which will turn out to be very useful like web grenade, wings which helps him glide, an automatic Parachute deployment, spider-Man logo on his chest being a drone, armbands giving information to Peter in form of hologram.
Being a Marvel project, this movie will be fun-filled, light-hearted, having a mix of comedic feel and action throughout.
